Student Athletes Honored for Outstanding Academic Achievement
On Thursday, February 24, Provost Peter Stearns, academic deans and directors as well as athletic coaches and coordinators gathered in Mason Hall Atrium to honor the recipients of the Provost Scholar Athlete Awards for 2011. Twelve student athletes, who have completed at least 38 hours at Mason and earned an academic grade point average of 3.75 or higher, were recognized for their outstanding academic achievement. The School of Management had two sophomores honored at this event: Madison Beumer and Javier Perez Navarrete.
Beumer is a bachelor-pre student hoping to major in marketing. She competes for the women’s rowing team. In a statement Beumer wrote for the ceremony, she states, “George Mason University has provided me with exceptional skills and positive experiences. Mason has broadened my thought process and given me the vision, confidence, skills, imagination and willpower to expand and accomplish my goals both now and in the future.”

Navarrete is a bachelor-pre student planning to major in accounting or finance. He is a men’s volleyball player. He wrote about his experiences at Mason and his goals for the future. “My first year and a half at Mason has been incredible and memorable. As far as my career goals, I’m looking to enter Mason’s School of Management next year, considering accounting or finance. In addition, I will be looking into the possibility of becoming a lawyer after college.”
We salute both Javier and Madison as great examples of the School of Management’s talented undergraduate students.
