Internship Overview

This summer internship will consist of tutoring English, math, and other academic subjects to Afghan refugee middle and high school students in the Alexandria West neighborhood. As an intern, you will deliver instructions and help coordinate activities for the literacy program and educational outings.

This is a unique opportunity to gain experience working with refugees, learning about a new culture, and developing new skills teaching literacy and mentoring youth. We verify community service hours or complete evaluations needed for volunteer’s academic programs.

Responsibilities

  • Commit to at least four weekly class sessions delivering literacy instruction to middle or high school students
  • Demonstrate leadership within a designated group
  • Communicate effectively to resolve issues in a multicultural environment
  • Participate in extracurricular activities
  • Team work: Collaboration with colleagues, administrators, and students
  • Organize lessons and activities

Qualifications

  • MUST agree to join the Afghan Refugee Mentorship Program GMU as an ambassador in Fall 2024
  • Dari and Pashto speakers (preferred but not required)
