2013, Apr 5: Competing in China: Local Firms, Multinationals, and Alliances, Mason Inn, Fairfax, VA

The goal of this research conference is to foster the development of a coherent, cumulative body of knowledge regarding business practices in China across multiple disciplines, including accounting, finance, management, marketing, and operation systems. Selected papers presented at the conference will be published in a special issue of the Journal of Business Research subject to the regular review process.

2011, Oct 18: Symposium on Business Globalization: Managing the Cyber Security Challenge, The Ritz-Carlton, Tysons Corner

The second annual Symposium on Business Globalization will focus on bringing together leaders in the field of cyber security and managing cyber threats in a global economy. Acclaimed author and journalist, Dr. Fareer Zakaria, and former director of the CIA, General Michael Hayden will deliver provocative keynote addresses. Panel discussions will feature business leaders from a variety of industries. The event will conclude with a “Global State of Information Security Survey” presented by PwC.

2011, Oct 18: Academic Conference on Security and Innovation in Global Business, The Ritz-Carlton, Tysons Corner

Providing a scholarly discussion on security concerns, emerging markets, and innovation in international business, the event will begin with a keynote luncheon with General Micheal Hayden, former director of the CIA. Participants will then hear several panel discussions featuring scholars from across the country. Jordan Siegel, Associate Professor at Harvard Business School, will deliver an afternoon keynote speech.

The symposium featured the Right Honourable Brian Mulroney, former prime minister of Canada, as the keynote speaker. Panel discussions regarding business globalization in China, India, Latin America, and North America and Europe featured executives from multi-national companies and were moderated by business school deans from the Washington, D.C., metro region.

2011, Mar 22: Security Risk When Doing Business Abroad, Fairfax Chamber of Commerce

This event discussed high priority security issues for the many international companies based in Northern Virginia. Panelists Bill Olsen, Principal, Grant Thornton LLP; Chuck Nelson, MS2 Security, Lockheed Martin; Tim Weir, Director of Security, Accenture; and Dr. Angelos Stavrou, Assistant Professor, Computer, Science Department, Center for Secure Information Systems, George Mason University, provided insights and best practices for dealing with the cyber, financial, personal security and physical security risks companies can encounter in the international market.

2011, Feb 10: Going Global—A Path to Growth for Small Businesses, Fairfax Chamber of Commerce

This event featured a panel of experts from academia, government and industry that discussed the opportunities and challenges facing small businesses as they expand globally. Panelists included: Professor Hun Lee, George Mason University School of Management (moderator); William Fanjoy, U.S. Department of Commerce; Michael Howley, Virginia Economic Development Partnership (VDEP); and Terry Hsiao, Hook Mobile.

“There are many challenges for small businesses to expand globally, but there exists considerable support available from the Department of Commerce and the Virginia Economic Development Partnership to help small businesses to expand globally and successfully,” said Hun.
