What if using a different perspective, you were able to see that that far from being the classic case study of pride, greed, and shortsightedness that led to reckless risk-taking, that Titanic’s designers, owners, and operators made a set of very rational strategic choices? In fact it’s likely you are making the very same ones in your own business to stay competitive.

Providing both a revealing case history for businesspeople and students and new insights for historians and scholars, this book takes you on a fascinating journey into the real story – the business story – behind the most famous ship in history. In doing so, you will learn how to assess risk – even when it appears each individual decision is a good one.

MIS 462: Data Mining for Business Intelligence (3 credits)
(HONORS SEMINAR: Fall 2013)

Location: Enterprise Hall, Room 174
Time: Tuesdays 7:20 pm – 10:00 pm
Instructor: Pallab Sanyal, Ph. D.
Email: psanyal@gmu.edu

Course Description:

What is this course about? Data mining is the art of extracting useful information from large amounts of data. You have probably heard stories about companies using data to recommend movies (e.g., Netflix), identify potential soul mates for people (e.g., eHarmony), and even discover who is pregnant based on credit card receipts (e.g., Target Corp.). But, how does one turn data into these types of insights? That’s what we will be exploring in this course.

Who can benefit from this course? Whether you are interested in accounting, finance, operations, management or marketing—you will benefit from learning how to make decisions driven by data and knowledge rather than hunches and intuition. In fact, the financial sector as a whole, and the accounting sector in particular, are areas which are seeing an extraordinary increase in the volume of information which requires processing, storing and analyzing.

What software will we use? Throughout the semester, we will use real data to work on a variety of data mining problems using a software called XLMiner. The software is an easy to use add-in for Microsoft Excel. You do not need any extraordinary technical abilities to excel in this course.

What will be the nature of assignments? Assignments will consist of homework problems and a final exam where you will apply the data-analysis techniques covered in class. In addition, there will be a group project and in-class discussions of articles related to big-data.

What about jobs? There is a growing demand for people skilled in analyzing large datasets. In a report published in May 2011, the McKinsey Global Institute projected that by 2018 the United States could face a shortage of 140,000 to 190,000 workers with “deep analytical” expertise. In addition, they projected a need for 1.5 million more data-savvy managers and analysts, who are capable of asking the right questions and consuming the results of data analysis.

Prerequisites: MIS 301, OM 301, OM 210, admission to SOM, and an overall GPA of at least 3.0.
(If you have a strong interest in the topic but your GPA is slightly lower than 3.0, send an email to Prof. Sanyal.)

Enrollment Procedure: If you wish to enroll in this course, you must send an email to Prof. Sanyal (psanyal@gmu.edu) expressing your interest with the following information:

Your Name:

Your G#:

Your Major:

Your Overall GPA:

Prof. Sanyal will issue overrides to selected students (maximum 20), who will be then able to register for the course via PatriotWeb.

A student who is unable to complete a major course within three attempts will be removed from the Accounting major, and required to select another major within the School of Management or elsewhere at George Mason University.

Attempts will be counted starting in Fall 2013 for the purposes of this policy, meaning that unsuccessful attempts of major courses prior to Fall 2013 will not be considered as part of the three maximum attempts. Students who will be making their third (or higher) attempt at a course in Fall 2013 or Spring 2014 should be able to register without any approvals or overrides.

Please contact the Office of Academic and Career Services at 703-993-1880 or somserv@gmu.edu if you have any questions.

As an academic member of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the United Nations’ specialized agency for information and communication technologies, George Mason students have the opportunity to enter the ITU Young Innovators Competition.

ITU is looking for the next generation of social technopreneurs—young people aged between 18 and 26 with an inspirational information and communication technologies-based solution to developmental challenges.

Ten winning finalists will be selected to attend ITU Telecom World 2013 in Bangkok, taking part in workshops, pitching sessions, mentoring and networking, plus receiving seed funding of up to USD $10,000 per project.

Your idea could be a start-up already up and running but in need of funding to implement the next stage and bring it to scale. Or it could be a concept worked out on paper but in need of support to make it real.

ITU is looking for innovative solutions which can really make an impact on the world and improve people’s lives by using connected technologies (ICTs) to address one of Six Grand Challenges:

Improve employment opportunities for young people and migrant workers

Reduce food and water wastage at individual and retail level

Facilitate access to public services for the elderly

Improve natural disaster prediction and response

Improve road safety for both drivers and pedestrians

Protect sensitive personal data and inspire the creation of local digital content

Deadline for applications: June 30th, 2013

For details on how to enter the competition, visit: http://world2013.itu.int/event/innovation/
