Accounting Honors Seminar
In order to graduate with Honors students must meet certain academic requirements (see below) and take the Honors Seminar, ACCT 462. Students must also graduate with Honors to be able to apply to the MSA without taking the GMAT, wear cords at commencement, and have "with honors" on one's final transcript and diploma.
The Accounting Honors Program offers a select group of outstanding accounting majors the opportunity to interact closely with accounting faculty in informal settings, visit employer sites on special Honors Program field trips, take an honors seminar, and include their resumes in special Honors Program communications with key employers. Honors scholars who graduate in good standing enjoy a streamlined application process for the Masters in Accounting (MSA) program at George Mason University School of Management, receive a special designation on their transcripts and diplomas, and are recognized at School of Management Convocation.
Admissions Requirements (Effective August 27, 2012)
Admission to the Honors Program is by invitation only. Students will be invited based on performance in Accounting 301 (grade of A- or better) or by faculty recommendation. After an invitation is extended, the following criteria will be used to determine admission to the program:
- The student must be an accounting major with at least two regular semesters of course work (i.e., a Fall and Spring semester) to complete prior to graduation,
- The student must have a minimum 3.5 cumulative GPA in their upper-level accounting courses (ACCT 311 and higher) or GPA in the top 10 percent in the major,
- The student must have an overall Mason grade point average of 3.0,
- Two academic/professional references,
- Submission of a personal statement/essay on why you want to join the Honors Program,
- Acceptance will be at the discretion of the Program Director on a case by case basis,
- Students who have been found responsible for an Honor Code violation are not eligible.
Requirements for Continued Participation
To remain in good standing in the program, an Honors student must maintain excellent academic performance, maintain high ethical standards, and exhibit significant participation in program events. Excellent academic performance is evidenced by meeting the curricular, co-curricular, and extra-curricular requirements listed below.
- Maintain a grade point average of 3.5 in all upper-level accounting courses (ACCT 311 and higher) with no grade less than a B- in any upper-level accounting course as well as a 3.0 overall grade point average,
- ACCT 204 Honors (or ACCT 203 or equivalent with a minimum A- grade),
- OM 211 Honors (or OM 210 or equivalent with a minimun A- grade),
- Regular SOM 301 (minimum A- grade),
- A set of TWO from the following courses in a regular 301/302 with a minimum A- grade:
- BULE 302, FNAN 301, MGMT 301, MIS 301, MKTG 301, OM 301
6. ACCT 462 Honors seminar.
Co-curricular Requirements (ONE of the following must be completed):
- Study abroad (many options are available -- see http://globaled.gmu.edu/index.html ,
- Research paper/Thesis as an independent study (ACCT 499) course.
- Participation in at least three honors events per semester,
- High ethical standards are evidenced by the absence of Honor Code violations. Students are required immediately to report to the Accounting Program Director any Honors Code violation for which they are held responsible.
Graduating in Good Standing
To graduate in good standing, an Honors student must meet the requirements for continued participation as described above for every semester beginning in the semester of invitation to join the Honors program. Honors students must also successfully complete the Accounting Honors Seminar at George Mason University with a grade of B or better.
The Washington, D.C., metropolitan area offers a wealth of opportunities for educational and recruiting activities for accounting students. Potential program events may include:
- Field trips to offices of key employers from international, regional, and local accounting firms, industry, and governmental agencies.
- Field trips to policy and regulatory agencies and think tanks such as the Securities and Exchange Commission, Internal Revenue Service, Joint Committee on Taxation, and Tax Policy Institute.
- Social events with accounting department faculty such as monthly faculty lunches and recreational outings.
- Special speakers in small group settings at George Mason University.
- Interview, office visit, and recruiting dinner etiquette sessions.
